Computer Terms
There is a wide variety of terms used to explain computers. The terms listed are a compilation of some of the more common terms used to describe computer hardware. Many terms may not be mentioned here. Please contact us, and we will define a computer term you are interested in knowing more about if it is not listed here.
CD-ROM Drive - Reads compact disks in the form of audio or CD-ROM. A CD-ROM holds data (perhaps audio as well). Newer CD-ROM drives will read CD-R (Writable CDs) and CD-RW (ReWritable CDs). The speed of a CD-ROM drive is not usually very important except when installing programs, running games that require use of the CD-ROM drive, or "burning" CDs with a CD-ROM Burner - a CD-ROM drive that is able to write to special CDs called CD-Rs.
CPU - Stands for Central Processing Unit. The CPU is the brains of the computer. Sometimes referred to simply as the processor or central processor, the CPU is where most calculations take place. In terms of computing power, the CPU is the most important element of a computer system.
Hard Drive - A device used to "permanently" store information within a computer, such as programs and data.
Memory (RAM) - Random Access Memory, the memory used to temporarily store information for processing. This is the fastest type of memory for the computer, and the most expensive. There are several types of RAM.
Motherboard - The main printed circuit board in a computer that carries the system buses. It is equipped with sockets to which all processors, memory modules, plug-in cards, daughterboards, or peripheral devices are connected.
Network Card - An expansion card that is installed in an available slot in a computer so that it may connect and communicate to another computer.
Power Supply - A source for the power needed for active electronic circuitry. Can consist of one or more batteries, or an electronic circuit which converts AC line voltage to the type of power required by a particular device.
Sound Card - A card inside the computer which allows the computer to produce sounds through internal or external speakers.
Video Card - Also called graphics adapter, display adapter, video adapter. A circuit board that enables a computer to display information on its screen. The resolution, number of colors, and refresh rate of a monitor is determined by the kind of video card used, plus the limitations of the monitor itself.
